During the time of the Holy Temple, the Half-Shekel was given to support the Temple service and the needs of the community, expressing unity and equality -

each person contributing an equal share as a partner in the collective.

Till this day, it is customary to give a symbolic Half-Shekel to charity before Purim, as a reminder of mutual responsibility, unity, and generosity.
